Oliver Jeffers

Image from The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers

I recently discovered Oliver Jeffers and I am totally smitten with his work. Every page of his books could be torn out and framed. I love the fact that he not only writes, but illustrates his books. To him the word and pictures are so intertwined he could not separate them from each other. He has written several children's book including the Incredible Book Eating Boy and The Great Paper Caper. If you have children you should run out and buy them all, even if you don't you should buy them anyway because who doesn't like a good bedtime story?

A Year of Adventures

I made the mistake of thumbing through this little beauty at REI last night. Instead of having visions of sugar plums dance in my head it is trekking through the Amazon and kayaking in the Sea of Cortez.

Book it

The other evening we spent some time perusing our local bookstore and I was able to drool over some of these books that I have on my "I want" list. Since this list is only in my mind, I thought it appropriate to put them on here in case anyone is looking for a gift for me. I mean my birthday is coming up in a several months, as is Christmas. Hint, hint.

Calling all valentines

This is just about the cutest little book I have ever read, I Like You by Sandol Stoddard. I bought it for Cameron for Valentine's day, but I am like a little kid in a candy store and I just too excited to wait.....so I gave it to him early. Oh well, he is married to a surprise ruiner.

Here is an excerpt from my favorite part:

I like you because because because
I forget why I like you but I do
So many reasons
On the 4th of July I like you because it's the 4th of July
On the fifth of July, I like you too
If you and I had some drums and some horns and some horses
If we had some hats and some flags and some fire engines
We could be a HOLIDAY
We could be a CELEBRATION
We could be a WHOLE PARADE
See what I mean?

Even if it was the 999th of July
Even if it was August
Even if it was way down at the bottom of November
Even if it was no place particular in January
I would go on choosing you
And you would go on choosing me
Over and over again
That's how it would happen every time
I don't know why
I guess I don't know why I really like you
Why do I like you
I guess I just like you
I guess I just like you because I like you.

Say Cheese

Not sure if anyone has noticed the lack of color so far this year in the photos, but I have. Looks like I am on a black and white kick. I am proud to say I have kept one of my resoultions of trying new recipes. Cameron and I tried our hand at Beecher's homemade macaroni and cheese from Pure Flavor and then I made an onion and potato frittata the other night from Martha's Great Food Fast cookbook. Both are excellent cookbooks and worth checking out.

A new year with new cookbooks.

For Christmas I received a few new cookbooks and an awesome set of pots and pans, I feel like a new woman in the kitchen now. I know there are a lot of Martha haters out there, but I must say this new one by Martha is fabulous. Anything you might want to know about cooking is in this book. The other night I had my family over for dinner and made a few things from it pages....namely homemade spinach ravioli with ricotta filling. I learned a few things about making pasta, since I have never done this before and so next time I am certain it will be even better.

A puddle's perspective

Interior Design magazine is my all time favorite magazine to peruse for various information. In this month's issue they featured a new book by Monica Castiglioni: New York City A Glimpse in the Puddle. Castiglioni is a Milanese jewelry designer and photographer, and has spent time looking down with her Canon G9 on the cobblestones of her TriBeCa neighborhood. She has discovered a unique vantage point of her the city through reflections. Now all that I need is a little rain so that I can try my hand at puddle photos.

Social consciousness meets the dinner table

Thinking back, I have always wanted to be socially conscious. As a child, I was a dedicated recycler, the incentive initially being a monetary one as they would give us cash for what used to be just garbage. As a teenager I decided to give up drinking soda and became a driving force in encouraging our family to eat even healthier. (note: I said even healthier, because my Mom was always good about serving us healthy foods) Now, as an adult being green and environmentally conscious has not only become the center for great debate, but has a huge impact on my role as an interior designer. Clients are constantly inquiring about ways to become more "green" whether that be using a rapidly renewable resource like bamboo for flooring, installing solar panels or using fluorescent lights.

One way in which you can reduce your footprint that I have never really given much thought to until now, is by eating locally. While out on our day of being a tourist I came across this cookbook called Pure Flavor, it featured 129 recipes from the Northwest. Being on the current cooking kick that I am, I really felt that I "needed" this cookbook…. oh wait, it is signed by the author and a first edition, a must have on all levels now.

Happily I took my new book home and began to read it like it was a great novel. I have learned all sorts of useful information like the difference between farmed, organic, and fresh, the pros and cons to all farming methods and what current FDA regulations are required for receiving such indications. There is a lot of information to sort through as a consumer, but by having your diet reflect the rhythm of the seasons you are quickly on the right path. So now I am going to make a concerted effort to buy what is in season, buy from the local farms and enjoy the abundance of food we have around us.

One such interesting fact I learned is although Idaho has staked claim on being the potato state, Washington is in fact the largest producer of potatoes in the country.

Here is the first of many meals from my new cookbook: Parsley and Dill Pesto on Steelhead.
